Common Online Threats:

With all the different threats out there today it can be tough to keep track of what’s what. There’s a lot of technical terms (salting, trojan, malware, spam, etc), so we thought we’d provide you with a list explaining the most common cyberthreats in layman’s terms.

Malware: Short for “Malicious Software” these kinds of attacks attempt to infect your computer, steal your personal identity information, or gain access to your network. It’s a generic term that’s tossed around a lot for all types of infections that hopefully will never find their way onto your computer.

Viruses: These are programs built by hackers that infect your computer. This can start with a single file, and just like a virus in the body, spread to multiple sections of your computer, replicating itself as the damage increases. This can cause both hardware and software issues.

Trojans: These nasty guys are not what they appear (much like the famous Trojan Horse). Trojans can appear as genuine, safe software that looks inviting to a user, but once it’s opened it releases a pathogen that can delete your files and destroy your hardware.

Worms: Worms are much like a virus that spreads throughout your computer or network, and can destroy multiple devices. Unlike a virus, they do not need to attach themselves to software that a user downloads. They can be planted all on their own.

Key loggers: These software programs capture your keystrokes, allowing others to potentially view your passwords. This is obviously dangerous as they can gain access to your banking information, ID, PayPal account, and more.

Adware: This type of software isn’t really harmful, but it is certainly annoying. If you’ve ever been browsing the web and an advertising box pops up on your screen, that’s Adware.

Wabbits: No…Elmer Fudd as not been reincarnated as a cyberthreat. Much like a virus, these self-replicating trouble makers harm your system, but in their own unique way. Unlike regular viruses or worms, they do not replicate through your LAN network.

BitDefender on the Web:

BitDefender’s Facebook page is loaded with techno-saving info everyone can benefit from. What are the latest threats? Who’s behind them? What new products is the company working on? These are just some of the questions that are answered frequently plus they have a great rap from their customers who often name them one of the best in the industry.

Their Twitter page has more of the same type of info as Facebook but with different articles. Security tips are abundant as well as some unique information about the company’s products.

BitDefender on Youtube:

BitDefender’s Youtube Channel is full of tutorials, so you don’t have to be confused about how their software works. There’s also plenty of Q&A sessions about internet security that would be use to view if you want to educate yourself on the topic.
