About Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways the second largest airline in the United Arabs Emirates (UAE), with its main hub at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH). The airline has its own alliance referred to as Etihad Airline Partners, which includes members like airbelin (AB) and Alitalia (AZ). From Abu Dhabi hub, airline flies to 116 cargo and passenger destinations. It has a regional headquarters located in Johannesburg, South Africa. The airline boast of a fleet of more than 100 Boeing Aircrafts and Airbuses, and a standing order of 170 aircrafts, including 25 Boeing 777, 52 Boeing 787 and Airbus A 350.

Company History

Etihad Airways was created by Royal Decree, specifically to serve Abu Dhabi. It’s relatively a new airline, created in July, 2003 as UAE’s national airline. Initially, United Arabs Emirates was served by Emirates Air as the main air company, though it mainly served Dubai.

Before establishment of Etihad, Abu Dhabi was served by Gulf Air, which was under ownership of Sultan of Oman, and the country of Bahrain. Later on, the Emirate family saw it wise to establish as state-owned airline company as the Sultan of Oman was becoming unstable. There was also need to cater for the city’s growing demand for air transport, among other reasons.

The airline started its services in November, 2003 with a flight to Al Ain. In June, 2004, it made its first direct flight to Geneva followed by Brussels in October, 2005. The first flight cost the airline about 8 U.S dollars investment in purchase of a new aircraft. In a span of just 3 years, Etihad Airways managed to reach 30 destinations, and set a target of 70 destination by 2010. By 2011, they were profitable enough and started investing in other airlines. The company entered into partnership deals with other airlines and by 2013, during their first 10 year anniversary, they had made a great progress.

In 2014, it placed the largest airplane orders in the history, expanded its trans-continental routes and introduced various new cabins on a number of its planes, including The Residence, which is a suited designed to accommodate just 2 passengers. The same year, it created its airline alliance known as Etihad Airways partners, where it holds the minority equity investments. The participants in the alliance are Air Serbia, Jet Airways and Air Seychelles.

Today, Etihad Airways is rated among the top airlines in terms of service, comfort and luxury, thanks to their high-quality, appealing products and services. It has won “World’s Leading Airline” award five consecutive times, from 2009 to 2013, making it the first Middle East Airline to win the award. Other awards include two times consecutive winners of “Cargo Airline of the Year” award in 2016 and 2017.
