Audible has been around for quite some time, it was originally founded way back in 1995 by Donald Katz. Donald was an avid jogger (Riverside Park was his favourite spot to run) and he’d listen to books on a casette tape while running. Cassettes in 1995? For those of you who are old enough to remember, did you ever try running with a discman (that’s a portable CD player, for the youngsters)? It simply didn’t work, the motion of running would cause the CD to skip constantly, even those models with the supposed ‘anti-skip’ technology. It wasn’t tenable.
However, the internet changed that as it became possible to share audio files digitally. But what to play them on? It wasn’t really feasible to bring your desktop computer running with you! In 1997 Audible released the worlds first portable digital audio player, obviously they didn’t end up winning out against the iPod but they do get the distinction of being first and example is now on display at the Smithsonian.
In 2008 a natural partnership between Amazon, the worlds largest seller of books, and Audbile, the worlds largest provider of audiobooks, was formed and the two companies joined forces to bring audiobooks to millions of customers. In 2012 the partnership brought about WhisperSync for Voice, which makes it possible to switch seamlessly from where your were reading to listening without having to search or losing your spot in a book. So you could go from reading at home to listening to the audio version in the car without skipping a beat. No more having to put down a book at a really good part! This works with all current Kindle readers and books. When you download the Kindle book make sure you select the audio companion and you are good to go. You can also use WhisperSync for immersion reading, you listen to the audio while the text that is being read is highlighted on your Kindle device or tablet. A great way for children to learn to read!
How do I listen to Audible audiobooks?
The simplest method would likely be using your smartphone, you can download a free app from the app store for your device (iTunes, Google Play, Windows store). If you have one you will be able to use your subscription to download audiobooks that you would like directly through the app, and you can make any additional purchases at the discounted rate for subscribers as well. If you don’t have a subscription then you can still purchase audiobooks at their regular price through the app. There are also Audible apps available for any tablet devices as well.
At home there are several bluetooth-enabled devices that can play audiobooks from Audible such as Sonos speakers, Fire TV sticks, and any Alexa enabled devices such as an Amazon Echo or Echo Dot. All of these devices can easily be purchased from Amazon and shipped right to your house! Shipping is also free if you are a member of Amazon Prime, can’t beat that! Any of the Kindle devices such as Kindle Oasis and the Fire Tablet will also support audiobooks. If you want to listen on your computer you can stream Audible ebooks directly from audible.com, or through iTunes.
Listening to Audible in the car
The Audible apps for your smartphone, tablet, or Kindle devices have a ‘Car Mode’ which narrows the screen options down to play/pause, rewind 30 seconds (incase you miss something due to a loud noise) and bookmark your spot. This way you can operate your listening device quickly without having to search for the button you need. If you have a car with bluetooth capability, then you can also stream the audiobook over your car speakers. If not, you can also use an auxiliary cable or USB connector. If you don’t already have those then you can easily get them off of, you guessed it, Amazon.com. I do this during my own commute and let me say it has really changed the nature of getting to work when I get to listen to a good book instead of the annoying morning radio commercials! If your car is really new then it may even have Apple Carplay or Android Audio which will let your control your Audible content right from your dashboard console. How cool is that? The future is now! Amazon also carries several models of carmounts that will allow you to mount your smartphone or other device on the windshield or dashboard for easy controlling.
The Romance Package
That sounds more like something that you’d get as an add-on for the honeymoon suite at a hotel than a book right? Well, the romance novel industry is huge and Amazon has put together a special deal for Kindle Unlimited and Audible subscribers. If you are a Kindle Unlimited subscriber, then you can add on Audible for just $6.95 per month which is less than half of the regular price! They have tons of different categories of romance books that you can browse, nothing is too niche! You can also search by character type, story themes, and ‘steaminess level’, you are certain to be able to find an audiobook to your liking.
Give the Gift of Audbile
Do you know a bookworm in your life who would love to have a subscription to Audible? Or somebody who is already a subscriber who would appreciate you gifting them a few free months to a service they already use and love? You can gift them a 3, 6, or 12 month membership which will get them 1 free audiobook per month of any value, and then they can purchase any additional books in a month at the discounted subscribers rate. Plus you get to keep any books in your Audible library for life, even if you cancel your subscription you will always have access to the books you have already purchased (just like a physical book!). What happens if you download a book and you end up not liking it? No problem, you can easily exchange it for another book as long as it is within 365 days of the original purchase. So you can try out a new author or narrator without worry!
